  1. Hello Pie
I am an Literacy and Numeracy Instructional Leader (Teacher Mentor) based in a Primary School in Broken Hill NSW Australia. I was searching for ideas about teaching concepts of Simple, Compound and Complex sentences to both students and teachers when I came across the Oxford School Improvement website. This led me on a wonderful journey of exploration of videos, handouts and teaching ideas for storytelling and writing. I am now going to share these sites and links with my colleagues and will be a regular visitor of all of these Outstanding resources.
    Many thanks

  2. Hi Pie-
I attended the Grammar through Talk for Writing session in Kent this month. I used some of your ideas in a lesson for an interview and got the job! I used your poem 'If I had wings' and we wrote some fantastic poems. Brilliant-I will be teaching a lively Year 3 class at a school in London! Thanks for the inspiration.
    All the best-

  14. The Inset you delivered to our cluster today was one of the most interesting and informative sources of Literacy I have been involved in throughout my Eight year position as an LSA and am looking forward to getting back to school tomorrow to apply some of the multitudes of ideas and concepts that I have glued in the fore-front of my mind,
    I thank you.x

  15. My school is very interested in working with Pie on developing our Writing across the school. We are based in the Northampton area and have tentative links with other schools about creating a cluster to work on this. However, after speaking to my head, we are willing to work with other schools out of our area to implement Talk For Writing.

Please can we have an outline of costs and any relevant information.

    Thank you.

  16. I am enquiring about the possibilities of you delivering INSET to a group of Norfolk schools. Colleagues have returned from your training ( the most recent being in Birmingham) inspired and empowered. As a cluster of head teachers or , using one of your brilliant openers (generating collective nouns) as a 'headache' of head teachers, we would very much appreciate knowing your availability and costs.
    Kind regards
    Nicki Cushion.
ps Having opened the 'opening exercise' out to staff at lunch, the noun became A 'hazard 'of head teachers... the jury's out on that one!

  17. Hi,

I recently attended your talk for writing course in Birmingham and have since completed a unit of work using your ideas. The results were fantastic and my head teacher is very keen on rolling your ideas and concepts throughout the entire school. I would be very grateful if you could send me details of prices, availability etc. Ideally we would like to book you as soon as possible!

  26. Hi Pie
I have been trying to arrange some INSET training via the National literacy Trust on Talk for Writing, which I believe is delivered by staff apporved by yourself. I have left enquiries, but nobody seems to be getting back as regards this. Can you help? Is there a more direct way of organising this?

I don't do Facebook, so hope you get this!! Attended your training in London yesterday and as usual I left totally rejuventated and reinspired. Thank you! I wanted to know how I can obtain the CD of Music for Writing which you showed us yesterday. Is it avaliable to purchase yet? I googled it but nothing came up. I would love to use it.

  31. Dear Pie,
I am currently studying towards an Education degree at University and am writing a report on the benefits of shared reading in the home learning environment. It was suggested that I research your work and it has been extremely beneficial. I thought I would just write and let you know how interesting it has been learning about what you do and of how much importance there is in this type of learning.
    Thank You

Teachers at my school would like to attend your training courses. However the nearest at the moment is Birmingham which is quite a journey from Northumberland. Do you have any dates in the pipeline to visit Northumberland/Tyne and Wear? Or we are willing to share the cost of training with another school.

  34. Dear Pie,
A few of our staff have attended and loved your 'Transforming Writing' courses and we would like an opportunity to work with you in training our staff in modelled and shared writing. We have just amalgamated with a School with 'Notice to Improve' and have an extremely high percentage of children with EAL which this would benefit. We would also invite other schools in our area. We are thinking of the INSET day of 11th June but are very flexible. Please contact to let me know if this is possible.

  41. Hello Pie,

In our literacy lesson today we re-wrote 'City Jungle', looking at the personification and thought you might like to take a look!

    Our ‘City Jungle’
Shops painfully vomit out all of the fun toys,
    Letterboxes gulp down business bills,
As it whistles in the dark night, swallowing the postage stamps
Whilst the people post the letters through its royal red lips,
    Deep down into it’s throat
The jet black road skips across the city, whilst it leads the way,
The cars smiled at me when I walk past,
    Reflecting ears listening,
Shining eyes showing me the way,
A band playing in the car
Houses eat anyone who dares to enter,
Looming trees stand with their arms out stretched,
Hair raised and coughing up leaves for a hedgehog’s home
Old banana skins jump across the rough road,
The enormous black bins regurgitate yesterday’s meal,
    While leaping along the road
    The streetlights glare everywhere,
With their bright eyes in the dark night.

  43. Dear Pie
Thank you for writing your latest book Talk for Writing across the Curriculum. I have seen you in Thurrock a couple of times, lastly on the subject leader training, and you have helped us to improve the writing in our school in a big way. I am so excited to teach writing, using all your ways in every part of the curriculum and the new book has helped immensely. Will share all the ideas with the rest of the staff who are equally excited because they have seen the results of talk for writing. We have some new staff who are going to be fully trained to use talk for writing. Thanks again Caroyn McAllister

I'm looking for inspiration to improve the writing in my school. I see that you do visit schools to do training and I believe that it would be beneficial for us all to have the same experience rather than a few selected teachers attend one of your courses. I would be grateful if you could advise me of costs and of course, your availability.

  73. Hello Pie,

I met you in Nottingham at Nottingham Emmanuel School on 07 March, when you introduced teachers from 11 schools in Clifton and The Meadows to your Talk for Writing programme.

I would now like to arrange an INSET day on Talk for Writing for schools in Bilborough, on the west side of Nottingham City, which we could also open up to other schools across the City.

Would you please contact me to discuss whether or not this is something you would be able to do, your charges and your available dates. Something this term would be wonderful. You can contact me by e-mail - charlotte.malik@nottinghamcity.gov.uk or telephone 0115 915 5709.

I really look forward to hearing from you.

    With best wishes.
